They don't move yet. There are still eight things.

The stage when the baby isn't going anywhere is the one almost nobody checks — and it's when they depend most on the house being ready.

Safety Babies and early childhood Updated 2026-09-05

Sleep

On their back, firm flat surface, empty cot. No pillows, no soft toys, no padded bumpers, no loose blankets. The empty cot is the recommendation with the most evidence behind it on this whole list.

Falls

Never alone on the changing table, the bed or the sofa. Not for a second, and not «they don't roll over yet». The first time they roll over is, by definition, one nobody saw coming.

Burns

Water heater at 49 °C maximum. Above that, a serious scald takes seconds.

Never hold them and something hot at the same time. Not coffee, not a pan, not a plate straight off the stove.

Suffocation

Plastic bags out of reach, including shopping bags and dry-cleaning covers.

No corded blinds near the cot. A cord hanging within reach of the cot is a strangulation risk.

The house

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every floor, tested once a month.

The car

Rear-facing seat, and never in front of an active airbag. Rear-facing for as long as possible, not just until the legal minimum age.
